Description Status Skin is a domestic manufacturer of protective films and cases for mobile devices. Its main advantage is the availability of film for any model because it is cut directly at the point of sale for a particular device. Thanks to this, there is no need for sellers to have a wide stock assortment, because thanks to the staff of architects who develop drawings, it is possible to get any sketch within an hour.

Objective and realization

The task was to develop everything from scratch within a period of up to 2 months.

For convenience:

We used paper instead of tape and a regular ballpoint pen instead of a knife.

Development Directions:

To speed up the development, directions were allocated:

Analyzing the operation of the plotter’s printing protocol.
Data transfer between the application and the plotter via Bluetooth LE.
Analysis of input drawings, for further conversion for “printing”.

Frontend та Backend

The existing portal was experiencing significant latency and was very difficult to work with. We chose to develop the back-end in Python and the front-end in Vue.

Development

Kotlin and Swift were chosen for application development, to maximize compatibility with different devices and to be native.

Observation

When working with Bluetooth, encountered significant drawing transfer times in real-world environments. Since the printing points were located mainly in shopping malls, there was a lot of interference from wireless headsets, speakers, keyboards, and mice. We practically selected the parameters of the data channel operation to achieve the optimal data transmission time.

The Silhouette Portrait 3 is a compact cutting plotter for home or small productions. It connects to your computer with a USB cable or via Bluetooth wireless connection. It uses the new auto knife. The width of the material to be cut is up to 210mm and the length is up to 25 cm when cutting through. The plotter can cut materials up to 3 meters long when cutting with a liner.
But that’s not all. The new model has a built-in function of cutting without a currier.

Thanks to the mutual speed of the application and the portal, the customer can order any drawing. Even one that is not available in the database. For example, he can order a drawing for a car stereo and pick up the finished product within half an hour.
